Over the past couple of days, while browsing trends, I came across the “playing house” aesthetic trend.

This sparked my curiosity and reminded me of a trend about the traditional housewife. As I began researching, I delved into a whole new world.

I once read an idea from a book discussing how burnout takes longer for women, which aligns with the trend that emerged as a reaction to capitalism and burnout. This led us to the traditional housewife trend that spread during the COVID-19 pandemic and has persisted. The idea of the traditional housewife, or traditional wife, is an extension of anti-feminist movements dating back to the 1970s.

This content typically focuses on the aesthetics of the 1950s, particularly the mid-20th century (1940s–1960s), the post-war era in America and Europe, where the wife was focused on her appearance and a peaceful, idealized life—a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of today’s world.

Therefore, if we consider it, it’s a calmer and more stable environment where we can have more control, creating a comfortable feeling. There have even been studies on a Spanish influencer living this lifestyle, analyzing her content, the percentage of advertisements she saw, and how advertising became an integral part of her day without any clear advertising bias.

So far, the topic reflects individual choice. Many people enjoy their lives as housewives or traditional wives. However, the problem arises when we talk about a generation influenced by social media, who genuinely believe the issue is as simple as the aesthetics of social media, failing to reflect the true responsibilities of a housewife. Furthermore, we haven’t addressed how this creates a cumulative effect on the new generation, fostering a simple, comfortable, and feminine lifestyle, and giving the impression that ambition and financial independence are exhausting and draining.

The issue has many social and political dimensions, especially when we consider the progress made in women’s empowerment. In other words, there’s a fear of building a hierarchical relationship between men and women instead of a complementary one. Ultimately, life is about partnership.

The topic was discussed on the Australian program 60 Minutes under the title “The truth about ‘tradwives’ and the men who want them”

If you’d like to understand their ideal wife, I recommend watching the documentary “Martha Stewart in Her Early Years.” Society saw her as the perfect wife, setting elegant tables and meals, embodying hospitality. Even in interviews, they said she was the wife every man dreams of.

Now, back to the reason we started researching this trend. It’s inspired by drama therapy, a type of psychotherapy that uses acting, storytelling, role-playing, movement, and voice as a way to help people understand, express, and process their emotions. So, who benefits? Social anxiety, difficulty expressing emotions, and also improving self-confidence.

Here we see fashion has adopted this trend, inspired by this approach, but certainly not in a structured, therapeutic way. It conveys the same concept. If we think about it, sometimes we find security when we return to a safe place. How many times have we gone somewhere and felt safe because it reminds us of a peaceful phase of our lives, free from demands and responsibilities, where everything is under control?

The trend is back, with pieces mostly from the 1950s, like fitted waists and flared skirts, and after the small heels, the biggest hit is the apron! Imagine, the apron is back in leather, and it was featured in the Miu Miu 2026 show.

Here are the most prominent pieces that have returned as part of the 2026 trend:
